Wondrous blossom, welcome.
My short-lived twin,
you’ll yet have your day.
My breath is your life;
my blood reddens
your scabby, choleric cheeks.
Wax, wax, brother, I’ll wane.
Star-crossed lovers were never so close
as you and I.
Flat, borderless, obscure:
are you not the emblem
of this amputated age?
Shroud my tender body of state
with your terrible crimson flag.
I know now that you have been with me
almost from the beginning.
You dug in like an ancestral tick
species ago–
a miniscule sleeper-agent
encoded, quiescent,
waiting with infinite patience
for all the genetic tumblers
to line up just right
and Darwinian original sin
to¬†gently whisper: “Now.”
