Approach Kyoto as you would a snake,
wary of its gleaming scales
beaded and swelling in the sun.
This city has held beauty
in a pale grip a thousand years,
watching disappointed lovers flare up,
moths ashed by its peacock rump.
Perhaps kitten killers were welcome here;
their swaggering shadows immune
to lacy stone and aged wood.
You though
will be conducted to the temple
and duly claimed as acolyte;
said rite to be omitted
if gibbering has set in.
