Crumpled on the park grass

like a discarded wind-up monkey

she makes small stubborn

gestures with meaning only to her.

God himself has forgotten

he made this crone, and

it’s been half a century

since she wasn’t ugly.

Hair of dirty straw

and what the hell

is she doing in the bushes now?

As I rush over to her, ghoulish

for a closer look

(because I am the clever one

who writes and records

passive objects like her),

she leaps onto her bicycle

with astonishing speed

and is gone.

She knows every street in this town

and like a mountain stone

has long outgrown mere human needs.
