By now, she muses,
she should be rich in life:
more sure of things,
not dependent on
the good graces of the more capable,
or the adulation of the naive.

The riches of Croesus had lain
glittering at her feet,
and she, she–

But what is the world to her,
who has adorned herself
with chance
and kept her heart
at the bottom of the sea?

Slowly, without fuss or bother,
she has become a nature unto herself,

a gleaming alloy, a chimera.

From the heart of a dying star
she drifts now
into a new and formidable age of ice.
